On this program we profile late legendary Scottish guitarist and songwriter Bert Jansch and the recording of the 1982 album Heartbreak. We’ll hear from the album’s producer Rick Chelew about the musicans and the recording of the album and playing live at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica.
By the late 70s Bert had recorded 11 solo albums plus 5 as part of the group Pentangle exploring a mix of traditional British folk, blues, jazz and rock. As a teenager, fan Rick Chelew hitchhiked to see the Pentangle play live in 1969 at the Troubadour in Los Angeles.
Following the 1980 album by The Bert Jansch Conundrum in the UK, fan Rick Chelew called Bert and offered to bring him to the US to record in California and tour in 1981. The album was recorded with a crack group of musicians in three days in a sweltering studio with a concert at McCabe’s on the final night. On this program we hear the history of the songs and listen to the music.
